When people ask about acupuncture, one of the first things I say is that acupuncture does much more than simply treat illness. Acupuncture enhances your vibrancy, your "aliveness." Treatment allows you to experience a greater sense of ease in life, and this enables you to deal with life’s ups and downs in a more balanced manner. The treatment process also helps you to develop greater awareness of your lifestyle patterns. When you see your patterns, you can determine which of them benefit you and which of them do not. Acupuncture then supports you as you develop new, healthier patterns of living.

How Acupuncture Works
According to Chinese medicine, universal laws of nature govern the human body as well as the world around us. Health in the individual, as in nature, is determined by a smooth flow of vital energy. This energy, called chi, circulates in our bodies along pathways called meridians. These meridians traverse and nourish your body as rivers traverse and nourish the earth. Rivers can flood, dry up, become dammed, or become poisoned — metaphors for what can happen to your vital energy. When this happens, your body may show distress signals in the form of symptoms. My goal, as an acupuncturist, is to reestablish the natural flow of chi in your body. This process is encouraged by the insertion of needles into specific points along various meridians.
About the Needles
Acupuncture needles are very slender, barely thicker than a human hair. They are made of stainless steel and are pre-sterilized, individually packaged, and used only on you. Most insertions are just below the skin’s surface. You may feel a sensation when the needle finds the acupuncture point. This sensation is often described as a dull ache or tingling feeling, which soon disappears and leaves you with a general sense of well-being.
What Happens
During a Session
The first visit lasts one and a half to two hours and includes a discussion of your health history and lifestyle as well as treatment. During this session, I will design a treatment plan to meet your unique needs. Each subsequent visit lasts from 45 minutes to an hour, so that you can be given ample attention. Initially, you will be seen weekly in order to create an internal harmony which can be maintained between sessions. When this has been achieved, usually after 6-8 weeks, the length of time between treatments is extended. The frequency of treatments will vary with each individual and his or her needs.
The Benefits
of Acupuncture
As treatment progresses, you may notice that you have more energy and more vitality, and that you get sick less often and recover more quickly when you get sick. You might observe that health problems other than the ones which prompted you to come for treatment disappear. You may also experience greater mental clarity and emotional well-being. Traditionally in China, doctors were paid only when patients stayed well. Acupuncture works preventatively because it can correct energetic imbalances before they manifest as physical, mental or emotional symptoms. So, coming for regular treatment is like pulling a weed in the garden when it is only an inch high, not waiting until it is choking the tomato plant to do something about it. Many individuals who receive regular treatment actually have lower long-term health care costs. This therapy is a potent preventative medicine.
